dharamallThe vulgar and inappropriate behaviour of leading members of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is a reflection of the immorality and criminality that is tolerated by that party’s leadership. The recent posting on Face Book by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Amerindian Affair, Nigel Dharamlall, not only showcases his ignorance but also is a continuation of the vulgarity exhibited by the Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General, Anil Nandlal.

President Donald Ramotar’s dreadful broadcast to the nation last Tuesday evening was the nadir of his troubled three-year tenure of office. It was an insult to the people of Guyana. It was an affront to the nation. It was a threat to paralyse the parliamentary process and smother the voices of their legitimate representatives in the National Assembly.

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has no confidence in the 22 year old People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration. The PPP/C is solely responsible for the series of constitutional crises currently affecting the country. The PPP/C’s policies of preventing the reconvening of the National Assembly, preventing the holding of local government elections and preventing the enactment of vital legislation are damaging democracy.

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) calls for the immediate promulgation of a national plan of action to respond to the threat of entry of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) into Guyana.

ebPresident Donald Ramotar’s broadcast to the nation last Friday 17th October, did not go far enough. It indicated that his Government, despite its awareness of international alarm over the EVD outbreak in certain West African countries, which was reported six (6) months ago, is still to convince the population at large that the Administration is ready to deal with the EVD threat.

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) observed the 22nd anniversary of the 1992 general and regional elections on Sunday 5th October. The elections resulted in the Party’s return to office on 9th October 1992. That return, however, led to the gradual ‘criminalisation’ of the state and precipitated several grave crises, more specifically in the post-2001 period:

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is deeply disturbed by President Donald Ramotar’s dilatoriness in issuing instructions to allow the Guyanese people to exercise their right to elect their representatives in local government elections at the earliest possible date.

President Ramotar told his supporters at a town hall meeting in New York organised by the People’s Progressive Party’s Association of Concerned Guyanese, “Well, my mother used to say you can’t have it in cake and have it in bake; you can’t have it both ways, you have to make up your mind what you want.”

President Donald Ramotar must tell the nation the truth about local government elections. The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration does not have the prerogative to deny the people their constitutional right to local democracy. The Guyanese people are being denied their right to elect their own local and municipal leaders. They are being denied their right even to know when those elections will be held.

keep calm - no confidenceA Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has committed itself to supporting the ‘No Confidence’ motion against the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration. There is NO CHANGE from that position.

APNU wants to state clearly that our call for His Excellency, President Donald Ramotar to name a date and set the machinery in place for the holding of local government elections is in no way contradictory, but rather complimentary of our stated position regarding local democracy and respect for the Constitution of Guyana.

After 20 years of a total neglect and destruction of our local democratic organs, the people of Guyana are entitled to know when local government elections will be held and local democracy restored.
